My old suitcase

It's right there in my icon, or logo, for this blog: my red Samsonite Oyster hardside suitcase.

That suitcase has travelled with me for 25 years. It was given to me as a birthday present back in the late 1980s. Over the years, it's gone all over the world: to Britain, to Egypt, to Hawaii, and back and forth between Sweden and Canada I don't even know how many times (definitely more than 40 anyway).

It's been a great travel companion: tough, durable, and protective. It has endured some serious mistreatment. I've squashed it together by sitting on it, standing on, and jumping on it. It's been loaded onto long-haul flights again and again. It's been dropped and thrown, scratched and mauled, and in closeups, you can definitely see the battle scars.

A couple of years ago I had one of the locks fixed, but it wasn't until last year when it finally got seriously beaten up. On our trip home from the Canary Islands, one of the wheels was busted off somewhere in transit, the front handle was bent, and I think that might be it for my old travel companion.

I am still considering whether I should take it to a repair place, and if I don't, I'm not yet sure how to put the old pack-horse to rest. And as for a replacement, well... there are lots of great hardside suitcases out there, but none of them come with the memories that this one does.
