Father's Day post: How my traveling kids became fish-eaters

My kids didn't use to be fish eaters. Sure, my son has always loved prawns, crab, lobster, and pretty much any kind of shellfish, but fish? Nope. Nuh-uh. My daughter wouldn't even touch the stuff, let alone attempt to eat it.

And then, last year when we were in Sweden, they went fishing with morfar, aka grandpa, aka my dad.

Simple fishing: rods, hooks, lines, sinkers, floats. They even dug up their own dew worms for bait with my dad. And they caught fish: lots of it. Most of it abborre, Swedish for perch.

My dad killed the fish they caught, then cleaned it. All while the kids watched him, absolutely fascinated.

Then my dad cooked the fish. He sprinkled some salt on it before letting it rest in the fridge for a while before simply frying it in butter. Abborre has a lot of little bones, and is a tough fish to filet while raw, so he got rid of the bones after the fish was cooked. Again, the kids watched him: absolutely fascinated.

Did they eat it? Did they ever. They gorged on it. And since then, they've been fish-eaters.

Thank you dad.
